Cheap The Home Energy Diet: How to Save Money by Making Your House Energy-Smart (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)

Over All Rating Reviews :
This is the best book I've read on the subject of improving household energy efficiency. Many of the books I've read in the past go through the basic things that homeowners can do to improve efficience, but this book explains the hows AND the whys.

The book surprised me when I first started reading it. I expected another "easy reader" on the subject. I was pleasantly surprised to find detailed explanations on why things should be done, situations where a particular improvement may not be the best, and how to approach the many different systems in a house - air heating and cooling, envelope, insulation, water heating, ventilation, etc. It was also refreshing to find different ways of examining the same system - for example, amount of fuel used for different heating systems, amount of heat generated for a particular type of fuel, and all the relationships between them.

As you start reading, you will find a lot of sidebars and short stories to highlight the discussion in the chapter. One thing I found slightly annoying is the number of Math Boxes that interrupt the flow of the book early on. These are sidebars that present sample calculations for the various topics, e.g. efficiency, fuel used for different heating systems, etc. I'd prefer the Math Boxes to be contained in an appendix with references in the main body of the book, but that's just me. Other readers may not find this annoying, and it's certainly not enough for me to reduce my rating of the book.

I highly recommend this book if you are serious about exploring ways to improve your house's efficiency. It's not an "easy reader", but it's well worth the time to read through it.

Shop For Heating Handbook

Over All Rating Reviews :
The text seems like it was dictated into a word-processor, shuffled a little and printed with no editing and no research.
Portions of text are repeated exactly in different sections of the book. The tables and diagrams are reprinted from random product literature and have no relation to the text. The entire content relevant to home heating installation and maintenance could be compressed into a pamphlet.

Perhaps the team responsible for this book learned from the same school as those who prepared Saddam's perplexing weapons reports.

This is the worst textbook I have ever seen, and a waste of time.

Buy DEWALT HVAC Technician Certification Exam Guide (Dewalt Exam/Certification Series)

Over All Rating Reviews :
Pros:
Has info on all parts of the NATE test: Core, HP, A/C, Gas, Duct, Oil.
Has a nice CD that comes with the book to go over the questions easily. These questions are also in the book with the correct answers. Good information for helping you understand what the test is and why you should take it.

Cons:
Only has a limited amount of questions. This book is not a cramming type book. It covers what "type" of questions to look for.

Other thoughts:
I have been in the field for about 3 years with 1 year of schooling. I took the HP and Core test after studying with this book and got an 82 on the Core and an 89 on the HP. I guess it worked.

This is a good book to start with to review for the NATE or other tests. It only has a limited number of questions though. I took the NATE Heat Pump test and passed with this books help, but it only had 50 sample questions for Heat Pump's and the NATE test had 100 questions. My suggestion is that there be more sample questions. I'd also like to see a reference for additional information if you don't understand a question. This book serves a purpose, but could be a better tool...

Carrier Infinity 96%+ Gas Furnace

This is my Aunt and Uncle's Gas Furnace. It is linked to the 5 Ton Carrier Infinity Condenser I have videos of. The condenser is an Infinity, also the furnace, and has an Infinity control. The system was made and put in 2005. The furnace is Two-Stage, Variable-Speed, and 120000 BTU's. This thing is MASSIVE! It is taller than me, and two times wider than the 75000 BTU Lennox. It is sized perfectly for the home. The house is large, and has an unfinished basement. The square footage is about 3000 finished space. There is a room over the garage, and a sun-room with auxiliary strip heat off the back.

Over All Rating Reviews :
I work in the energy conservation field. I am frequently asked by people if there is a reference book that is not filled with technical jargon. Something the layman can understand. I think this book may be it. I saw it on the Amazon web site during a search for energy related reference books. I haven't finished it yet but so far I find it is very informative using illustrations and photos along with explanations of energy saving measures. I recommend it to anyone that would like to make a difference by reducing their energy costs as well as their carbon footprint.

The MH125FAV is the least powerful of Mr. Heater's line of propane forced-air heaters for larger jobs (see the MH170FAVT and the MH400FAVT). Even so, it still gives you up to 125,000 Btu--enough to heat 3,000 square feet. Though the larger models give you more Btus, the heaters in this line share the same basic features, including an automatic shutoff with loss of flame or power supply and a high-output fan that circulates heat quickly. Hooking the heater up to the 40-pound propane cylinder (not included) is easy, and the 10-foot hose and regulator are included. CSA certified. One-year limited warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.

Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

Low Price The Home Energy Diet: How to Save Money by Making Your House Energy-Smart (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)

Over All Rating Reviews :
I skimmed this book very rapidly so this is not a comprehensive review. I bought it looking for "how to" information on solar energy. I didn't find it, at least in an easy to assimilate and put to use form. What I did find was almost a dissertation about heat at the level of a physics class: what heat is, what its innate properties are, where it comes from, where it goes, etc. It actually is fascinating reading and probably makes an extremely good foundation for the most efficient use of all the forms of energy that we use in our daily rounds. But it wasn't what I needed, super-fast. I may contact the author from his blurb on the inside back cover of the book for help.

Where To Buy Energy Saving Home Improvements from A to Z: Real Estate Investor, Homeowner, Home Buyer and Seller Survival Kit Series

Over All Rating Reviews :
The other books I have purchased by this author were excellent so I bought this one also and am very happy with my purchase. Renovating our home has been a MAJOR expense and project so we wanted to make sure that we did everything in the most energy efficient and cost effective way. There were countless tips and methods to greatly reduce our utility bills with the renovation work that we learned in this book. We had a house builder do the renovation work we couldn't do ourselves but we still used this book to in a way give advice to the builder to do the renovations so they will cut our electric, heating and air-conditioning bills. Our builder was quite surprised at how much we knew about energy efficient renovations. But we can't take the credit since it was all learned from this book. Highly recommended book if you're want to learn how to greatly reduce your utility bills.

Wood Boilers - Save Money - www.alternativefuelboilers.com

If you are like most people, you have watched energy costs skyrocket in the last few years. Well guess what? Prices for oil, natural gas and electricity will only go up. Want to begin saving hundreds, even thousands of dollars on your yearly heating and hot water bills? Modern wood boilers utilize gasification burning technology to get an amazing 87% energy efficiency from traditional wood fuel sources. These wood boilers utilize a combustion technology called 'Gasification' to capture, extract and transfer this energy that typical wood furnaces simply waste. As the wood is burned in the firebox, fresh air is blown downwards through the logs and coals. As this hot smoke and air mixture is forced into the combustion chamber, it is mixed with a second jet of super-heated air. This results in a torch like combustion of the retained gases, at spectacular temperatures exceeding 1800 degrees. The result: almost all the gases are burned, with little residual soot or creosote, and the extra energy extracted is transferred to a full jacket heat exchanger. This extraordinary process allows gasification wood boilers to achieve overall heating efficiencies of almost 90%! Did you know you can install and integrate wood boilers with your existing heating system, so when you are not home, your conventional furnace conveniently runs? When you return home, it's back to the savings! Burn any kind of wood you like, including pallets, chip, waste, and even fresh cut green wood. No waiting ...

Tutorial Reddy Heater 50,000 BTU Propane Forced-Air Heater #RLP50V Description

The Reddy Heater RLP50VA variable propane heater is a great solution for heating smaller construction projects or even work areas around the home. It operates at three different heat settings (30-, 40-, and 50,000 Btu) so you can conserve fuel when using the heater in smaller spaces. Setup is easy: simply connect the included hose and regulator to a to 20- to 100-pound propane cylinder (not included). Depending on which cylinder-size/power setting combination you use, you can get anywhere from nine to 72 hours of operation on a single tank.

Completed Homemade Propane Forced Air Heater

This is the completed (as far as I plan on completing it) propane forced air heater. The fan is from a kitchen exhaust vent hood. The rest is just various pieces of 6" and 8" ductwork and 1/4 galvanized piping. The final piece to get the flame right was the polyurethane can in the back-center of the inner tube. In this run I estimate it to be putting out around 100000 BTU, but by reducing the amount of air bypass I can get it up to at least 200000 BTU, limited only by how much gas the 20 lb. cylinder will put out. For those interested I made a forum thread covering the process. backyardmetalcasting.com

Cheapest Forced Hot Air Furnaces : Troubleshooting and Repair

Over All Rating Reviews :
After being told by a so-called professional that my Furnace was basically shot and that it would take upwards of $550 to fix it or I could buy a new one for $700 ... I decided to do some research on my own. I found this book and it was a god send. It detailed exactly what was wrong with my furnace and hot-to fix it. I fixed my furnace for the price of the book and an $80 part.
